The Irish Times reports that Wetherspoon's are selling beer at 99p a pint[/url:2rvvml0o]. They only mention Greene King IPA and San Miguel, but it's still technically beer.

Naturally the neo-prohibitionists have been bleating about it encouraging binge drinking, but Wetherspoon's simply point out that supermarket beer is cheaper.

Can you see something like this happening is Ireland?

Not in all places it would seem (Here)[/url:2bcrym9y] an the San Miguel is a 330ml bottle

I'd imagine that it would fall foul of the the new Intoxicating Liquor Act. It's not much of a stretch to to see it as

Anyway, you only get 33cl of San Miguel for your 99p. And they're a whole £1.49 in central London.

Well that's is vague and subjective.

At what point would lowering the price of a pint be "likely to encourage persons in that place to consume intoxicating liquor to an excessive extent", considering that people have no problem consuming alcohol to an excessive extent at a high price?

Quietly offering €2 pints probably wouldn't be a problem, but why bother?

No culture of price competition in Irish pubs.

That's just ambiguous enough to be worthless. The very existence of the pub falls into that category.
