No, Don't use bread yeast.... it's not the same.

I don't think there is a bricks and mortar shop in Cork, though some health shops sometimes have certain supplies.

Will you be going to Easterfest this weekend? If so introduce yourself to the guys in the Beoir T-Shirts.

How's it going?

A new homebrewer from Cork here. I got the Cooper's starter kit as a gift for Christmas, and have been delighted with it ever since. I'm on my fourth brew now (a lager), having already done an ale, a wheat beer and another lager. I've been happy with what I've made thus far, except maybe the first brew - though that was mainly due to the lager lacking carbonation somewhat and being a bit flat. It was easily solved for the future, though!

I was a lurker on this forum (and also the Boards.ie subforum) for a bit, but decided to join and become more active. Hopefully ye can teach me a thing or two about homebrewing.

Just a question here. I was reading about being able to ferment normal apple juice to make cider. I'm presuming it'd yield an average quality? Or would it be poor?

Cider 101:

Cider is made by fermenting apple juice - period!!

If you want to make a start in cider making now ( and don't have apples ) then its "Lidl Turbo Cider"

This uses Lidl AJ ( at about 1€ a litre ( not a bad price compared to getting fresh AJ from shop bought apples)).

In the autumn free apples from home or neighbours are worth juicing as the cost is better (assuming free apples, electric, big kit etc.)

Some "Turbo" recipes use some raisins for "vinosity" and then add a wine yeast.

Thats it!

If you search this forum and others for Turbo cider then you will get a lot more info.

Welcome!!

Will
