Aparently the reason behind the minimum size requirement is to ensure the still is not moveable!

Also talking to other distillers at the first Alltech conference its much more efficient and timely to distill a big batch as a lot of small ones.

Having said that the laws do allow for less than a 1800 l pot - you just have to go through a court appearance and convince the judge!

I used to work in southern germany and saw the beautiful small stills that were being made. All shinny Copper, Stainless, Brass and digital controls.

The reason there is a size limitation I understand is lobbying from beer breweries that consumption of spirits was bad for the nation. I must look but that size I think is there since colonial times.

The reason the size is what it is is because that's the minimum amount required to fill one barrel with cask strength spirit. i.e. no-one would need to make less unless they were moonshiners etc.

Or so I'm told.

That's interesting. It would suggest they are buying grain neutral spirit in bulk, diluting it, and redistilling it with their own water. Pretty gimmicky if true, but I know of other microdistilleries doing just that.

Yea these was a massive propitiation again sprints in the 19th C, nearly or most largish town had one distillery
