Thankfully the title of this thread is becoming less and less the reality.
I'm from Athlone. 3 years ago you'd have been lucky to get a large bottle of Guinness in a handful of pubs in town. Now there are several pubs selling Irish beers. Maguires has Porterhouse Plain and Rebel Red on tap as well as bottles of o'haras, porterhouse and a few others, they got the ball rolling when they opened and from there people are following them.
Murphy's Law now have hooker, galway bay and whitewater beers.
The Malthouse has Carrig Red and Bo Bristle IPA on tap and mcgrahts and o'hara's bottles and noughtons (opened last week) has 3 8 degrees beers on tap aswell as o'hara's bottles.
I've had owners of a few other bars around town contact me about advising them about which beers they should look at and how to promote them.
If they take on a few beers and they sell well then other bars will do the same. People are starting to vote with their feet in town for selection and quality over the 5-6 standard mass produced beers, thankfully.
