Then how would you explain the States?

It started in the States in the 1980s and they're only reeping the benfits now

I was in the swagman last week. Rogue Brutal Ipa on tap, I was pleasantly surprised. Nice place worth a visit.

Thanks for all the good responses. I have heard but not sure if it is true that Diageo is controlling the co2 supplies to bars and that if a pub doesn't carry Guinness then no Co2 for that pub.

Do larger brewery pressures pub owners not to carry craft brews?

The States is [i:1tvg8qmx]only being seen by the rest of the world[/i:1tvg8qmx] to reap the benefits now - they went from 50 breweries to 1000 from 1980-'95.

Lots of factors behind that, of course, but they didn't get there without converting lager drinkers.

I always thought a great inverse use of the BeoirFinder app would be for pubs to use it to see what coverage there is of craft beer in their area...

I recently moved to Chicago and my God is it beer heaven! You can't go into a bar without finding craft beer and the majority of bar staff know the type of beer and how it tastes etc. Even the run down bars carry craft beers. Saying that, the majority of my friends over here will drink craft beer or shitty Bud Light, it's all just considered beer over here.

Hopefully it will catch on in Ireland soon. The bar culture is much different here though. Bars are the clubs in the US. People will go out for a night out in several different bars as opposed to starting in a bar and ending in a club. The clientele in these bars are also better and during the day you won't find some auld fella your scumbag in the bar, but it'll be busy with "regular" people. Obviously this doesn't hold true to Mulligans, the Porterhouse and Galway Bay chain etc in Ireland which are usually busy at all times.

Anyway, I think it just comes down to ignorance on the part of some people. I think you can see the openness to craft beers through the generations though, I think each generation becomes more open as they hit their twenties. This in a way holds through for Americans. The beer revolution started in the 80's over here and many people have just grown up with it and it's familiar. In Ireland it really only began about 4 or 5 years ago and people are starting to become aware of the availability of beer other than stout or lager. Just my two cents, hopefully he growth continues anyway.

Not strictly true:

Large pubs (and in Ireland nearly all are large for this discussion) that sell G and H are supplied by BOC gases.

G & H then reimburse BOC depending on the casks sold of each. A typical 6 foot bottle of mixed gas (75/25 for G 50/50 for H) does about 24 kegs

I have heard (from our BOC gas man) that some smart arse pubs are getting G & H from "Up North" so that the volumes don't match.

I.e. BOC sees that 80 kegs a month of gas are going out the door but G & H are only delivering ( and hence paying BOC ) for lets say for 20 kegs.

Answer: Easy peasy!! BOC just sends the message: "If you get your kegs up north you best get the gas as well"
