Eight Degrees Brewing Company? 14 years 10 months ago #55

I had a couple of pints of HG in Against the Grain last Saturday and really enjoyed it. Reminded me of Galway Hooker with the dial turned down ever so slightly, which was a definite thumbs up for me as GH seems to strip the tongue when I drink too much of it, thereby not making it a great session beer imo.

Picking up a couple of bottle of HG and GH (hmmm... just noticed the initials are the same but in reverse) later this evening from Drinkstore so I'm looking forward to trying the bottled versions of each for the first time. I might even pop into Mulligans and have a pint of each for comparison. <!-- s:D --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_biggrin.gif" alt=":D" title="Very Happy" /><!-- s:D -->

Just had a couple of bottles of these bad boys and found the aroma when i cracked open the bottle was great. Once i tasted it the aroma hops quickly took a back seat and in to the front seat jumped the bitterness. And it didn't want to go away! Towards the end of the bottle more of the sweetness came through. I like it all the same and i'd get it again! I haven't tried this yet on tap but i'd be very interested to taste the difference.

Had a bottle the other night. It was nice but not as nice as the draught version. A little bit too heavy on the bitterness without enough sweetness to balance it.

An Unfiltered, bottled golden ale?? In Ireland?

That's brave given the expectation for absolute clarity in this colour of beer. I'm excited and I'm dying to get to taste it now that I'm not travelling for a few weeks.

How's the clarity?

-With that state-of-the-art bottling machine they have, PLUS the lack of filtration and leaving some yeast in solution this beer should have a great shelf life.

I've been super impressed with all of the branding, blogging, the website, equipment decisions, and product line decisions now I just need to get my hands on this beer!

Hopefully I can make it to Bray to pick some up this week.

Has anyone spotted the porter anywhere either on draft or bottle?

I know they made a visit to Black Raven brewery in Redmond, Washington and they have the best brown porter I've ever had in my life (and the brewery prints COPIOUS information on what grains and hops they use) and I'm REALLY hoping that the Eight Degrees porter ends up inspired by that porter at least. (Black Raven doesn't even bottle so there's only one way to get it and I only get to have it once every 12 - 18 months.)

-A shame about the yeast in the bottle. Did you give it a good chill before opening? Is it just that the yeast isn't sticking to the bottom of the bottle very well or is it that there's just too much total quantity of yeast in your opinion? (the later is obviously easily fixable)

Has anyone seen the 8 Degrees brew kit? (I know it's the old O'hara's kit but I've never seen that either) What kind of fermenters are we dealing with? -UK Dish Bottom or clyndro conical? (Clyndro-conical should make control over the amount of transferred yeast pretty easy. -I'm not sure how large UK dish bottom fermenters get but considering this is a 15HL brewery I'm guessing clyndroconical FVs.)
-Anyone spot any "bright"/"conditioning" tanks?
