It isn't really, everything you can touch is a chemical including alcohol.

They are probably not very harmful. But it took people years to notice smoking was bad for you and that has a 50:50 chance of killing you so if something was slightly dodgy for you it might take a while to get noticed.

The PH used to have a poster hanging with a list of 10-15 chemicals used by macros, BUT not by micros. Eg Sulphicants(i may be wrong) are used by macros to make the processs of filling kegs easier.

Ok so they probably mean chemical as something where you know exactly what it is[/url:1km9mls7]
[quote:1km9mls7]Chemical substances (also sometimes referred to as a pure substance) are often defined as "any material with a definite chemical composition" in most introductory general chemistry textbooks[/quote:1km9mls7]
unlike say tap water where it is hydrogena and oxygen, flouride, chlorine and a load of other things you don't know about. or Barley where the plant naturally consists of thousands of chemicals.

I am not going to guess as to who uses more artificially created chemicals. Thom or Bogmyrtle would be able to answer this. Ill go ask them.

I think you are being far too scientific about this a_friend_in_mead. When people say "chemicals" in conjunction with a food product, they are talking about any kind of artificial additive. Not all additives are bad, but some are and some may prove to be in time.

Micros are less likely to add an artificial preservative, or colouring, or foam enhancer, or whatever, but doesn't mean all of them stick to natural ingredients. The poster in the Porterhouse referred to their own beers, not all micros.

For some reason alcoholic drinks don't have to list their ingredients, which is a problem if you have a bad reaction to one of the additives which may be used in a beer.
