Nøgne Ø 18 years 1 month ago #1

Just back from a ski trip to Norway and I am glad to report that I managed to get my hands on a few Nøgne Ø beers which were mentioned in BeerNut's Oslo travel article. When I arrived there last week I had the following bottles waiting:

Porter
IPA
Pale Ale
Saison
Amber Ale

This is only a sample of their range and every one was a winner. I don't think I've tasted as much consistently brilliant beer from one brewer for a long time, from the delicate saison to the powerful IPA. If you're planning on consolidating your loans I recommend a trip over to grab a few cases. They do export, but I've never seen their stuff over here.

I also tried the HaandBryggeriet Porter which was top class. [url:iaoqwvs2]http://www.haandbryggeriet.net/[/url:iaoqwvs2]

Thinking we might not get enough rain and shite weather in Ireland this summer I have booked flights to Norway for a week in late June this year. Good to hear the beer is good must look up TBN article.

Off to the bank to extend the mortgage

Glad you got some. In your face, Norwegian licensing law.

If I had to criticise them, I'd say that both tend to go a bit overboard with the carbonation, but yeah, it's real textbook how-do-I-make-the-best-possible-version-of-this-style? stuff.

From what I read there is a wealth of Scandinavian breweries at this kind of thing. Anyone fancy a factfinding mission to Denmark?

The generally available beer is your run of the mill fizzy lager, which is of course cheaper.

It's a beautiful country by the way. Whereabouts are you off to?

Can't say I noticed this, I'd welcome another opportunity to compare notes though. It's a wonder anyone is making craft beer in a country with such hostile alcohol legislation, let alone beer of such quality.
