Firstly, thank God no-one here drives heavy machinery for a living. Is there anyone sober after noon?

What I was really wondering was whether it is a 'known procedure', and someone could verify they've tried it and could give me suggested quantities.

If not, I may take a sample from my next batch, and pop a couple of cloves into it.

Why stop at cloves?

Purely purely personal opinion, based on gut, emotional feeling and not on anything in the real world; I would say while I'd see nothing wrong whatsoever in the addition of cloves or any other more or less bizarre ingredient - it's all about experimentation and messing, right? - I think for the purposes of a Weiss beer it might be cheating. Again though, that's from a very, very "purist" (read: pedantic wench) kind of viewpoint though.

Admittedly I'm not entirely sure what the difference is supposed to be between a "Weiss" and a "Wit" other than the addition of spices in the latter, and the nationality of origin but if you were adding cloves to get a clovey hit to the beer, would that not make it more a Wit than a Weiss? Or perhaps we should just bite the bullet and call it a "Bán"

You're absolutely right, if you're conforming to a style and want to stay within that style then adding cloves to a weiss is technically incorrect. Of course you're also right to say it's about experimentation so a 'Bán' (or wheat) will cover you. Or there's a third option, you could just not give a damn whether it conforms. I think all three options have some merit

Speaking of Bán, is it just me or did anyone else find the Árainn Mhór beers a little disappointing? I wanted to like them but they just didn't work for me.

I quite like the Rua, but the Bán ain't great.
