Unreliable Hooker 18 years 3 months ago #1

I visited the excellent Bierhaus in Galway with my girlfriend during my visit west last weekend. The pub is fantastic: comfortable, friendly, nice, good music and a cracking beer selection. My only complaint is that the pint of Galway Hooker wasn't nice. None of that beautiful pineapply hoppiness that I associate with the beer. Without that, the beer appears bland. I'm not sure if it's a freshness issue, a storage issue or possibly a bad batch. I wasn't annoyed or anything but I do find it slightly worrying. If any other customers were to try Galway Hooker that night, they would have been disappointed and maybe never inclined to try the beer again which would be a big shame.

I know this appears a minor quibble but I'm concerned that the brewery might be interested in looking into this.

What do you all think?

could the hop storage's be effecting our beloved hooker?

I had some Hooker in the 12 Hotel Bearna, and while it was very good it didn't have the hop freshness of the B & C. This is to be expected in pubs with little throughput. We are spoiled by the high turnover in the B & C, but can't really expect the same freshness from quieter establishments.

Makes sense. If the hops aren't fresh, the beer seems pointless though. What about smaller kegs?

Aiden does run half kegs in some of the smaller pubs to prevent exactly what we might be experiencing.

Very sensible. I wonder do Bierhaus use half kegs. Maybe more places should.
