time for an open letter? "Dear ICS, love the work you're doing in supporting people at a difficult time. You seem to be making some erronious claims in the media. We have this evidence (quote sources), which seems at odds to your published position - could you please divulge the source material for the basis of your claims? Yours etc Beoir"

Yes, and we don't need to. Alcohol is dangerous if abused but it is, on the whole, both beneficial to health and enjoyable if consumed sensibly. Attacking alcohol as a whole does not make sense as it is throwing the baby out with the bath water.

It doesn't matter how many reports are produced claiming alcohol causes people to die or one thing or another, as long as moderate drinkers are living longer than abstainers the benefits must outweigh the risks. If that were not the case, abstainers would be outliving moderate consumers.

We just need to get that message out consistently.

As I tweeted to the Irish Cancer Society at the time (just before I left); Alcohol is NOT listed as a carcinogen. I deal with Safety Data Sheets (SDS) every working day and the one for alcohol (ethanol) does not list it as being a carcinogen or even as a suspected carcinogen. That is a fact of the matter. Where the ICS are probably getting confused about are the following 2 points;

1. Acetaldehyde is a carcinogen, and is a by-product of ethanol when broken down in the body - that's one of the reasons for a hangover (along with dehydration). But as I understand it - that happens from drinking to excess.

2. Alcohol (especially when taken in high ABV form e.g. spirits) can lead to sensitisation of the throat area and increases the risk of developing throat cancer for those who smoke.

Alcohol is NOT carcinogenic![/quote:2gtoas8d]

I would add that things like a [b:2gtoas8d]hiatus hernia and alcohol [/b:2gtoas8d]can contribute indirectly through the acid of the stomach constantly burning the oesophagus eventually leading to cancer.[/quote:2gtoas8d]

My Hiatus Hernia never bothers me with alcohol

Now , if I drink a commercially produced drink with aspartame in it ( whether it's alcoholic or not ) then the Hernia causes me severe pain .

I reckon that "Drink" could well be a carcinogen ,
But not all beer is made with carcinogenic chemicals. And as Dr.John has pointed out Ethanol has no known carcinogenic effect .

You know where you stand with sugar and again, as long as you don't overdo it...

Yep sugar is bad, but it's a known bad with known effects, aspartame is nasty crap that tastes like chemicals and has a multitude of bad effects. Apparently ex-alchoholics get into diet drinks a lot because there is free methanol in aspartame and it gets them hooked.
I try to avoid sweeteners with my kids wherever I can, but with kids stuff it's very hard these days, even a pack of walkers crisps has aspartame in it.
