It wasn't a rolleyes moment really. I assume it was just because it was a new beer. Messers has a lot of staff so I only expect so much. It's a crazy hybrid of a place that does its own beer and is a respectable pub by day and by night turns into a crazy whacky 3 floor disco with all sorts of cavorting going on.

While I wish everyone who worked at a bar was as passionate as some in the other pubs ye can't have it all.

We were in Messrs on Saturday afternoon & Melissa the master brewer gave us a great tour of the brewery & then we sampled 4 of the brews , staff were great & beer was great. I can understand that if you arrive in on a busy weekend night it might be hard to get info on the beer from barmen as it can get very busy at times

it's not really "having it all" though is it, I mean they are brewpub staff and I really don't think it's too much to ask that barstaff know about the beers they sell, especially when it's brewed on the premises. they're not 'doing us a favour' by indulging our questions, which is how it feels at times.

Two nights ago I was in Moeder Lambic, and it was an incredible experience hearing the waitress answer questions and inform the table next to us about this particular beer, that particular brewery, what trappist meant, the various theories about what tripel and dubbel means, debunking myths, telling stories, making recommendations, it was great. She really knew every beer on the enormous menu inside out. These guys had come in because they were curious, and knew nothing much about beer, she engaged them and you could see they were getting in to it, there was lots of chat about it all once she left them.

In B+C, ATG, and even Bowes the barmen chat about the beer, ask you what you think, give you their opinion, make recommendations etc and it's the right way to do it. In PH too sometimes but they're almost always too busy. I always thought messrs should ramp up the enthusiasm a bit.

Popped in here the other day. Asked for a Brown Ale - "Eh... uh... ah... eh... don't we have that... sorry". "Oh was it just for the Porterhouse festival then yeah?" "I dunno".

First time I was willing to say "sure twas just that one bad experience that one time with that one bloke". Second time... hmmm. There was brown ale on the second floor. Seriously nice beer.

I too had a similar experience on Sunday. When I asked what ales were on, was offered Rusty only and told it was "like Kilkenny". Unfortunately it was, and I hated Kilkenny. Sometimes only a shot of hops will hit the spot! The evening was rescued by a couple of pints of Hooker in the Palace around the corner. Lovely!
