Pour Your Own Pint 16 years 3 months ago #1

I heard an ad for this on the radio today. Where you can pour your own pint in a pub 'so you do not have to wait'. I know the Baggot inn has had this for years but is it being rolled out more generally.

The website is here[/url:329ep613], the pubs listed here seems to be very touristy. But the radio add implied it was more widespread.

What do you think of the idea of pouring your own pint in a pub?

Only place Ive seen them installed was the Bleeding Horse. Very gimmicky and not really needed in this age of the empty pub. Not too many places with five deep queues at the bar anymore.

I was kind of assuming that the aim was to turn bars into venting machines with roofs. The way supermarkets are being turned into that with their self scan checkouts and such. Is the aim to make the customer the barman or is this only for tourists?

They must have a shed load of these things cos they're pushing them on everyone. I reckon it's just to up sales of 2 falling products(guinness & carlsberg).

However they do work in some places, but the con's out do the pro's for most places; dedicating a certain area for the set up, dragging kegs and gas across the room to replace empties, payment issues(you can pour as much or as little as you like-47c of stout please-)
plus all the messing from the idiots that lurk in any bar.

If you walk past the arlington on a diddle-e-i night, the tables are used for dinner, which i assume is against the original idea for the set up!, plus they are connected to the coldroom directly. So they will be left with big gaps in the floor if they decide to get rid of them.

Pour your on Hooker, now thats the way forward <!-- s:lol: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_lol.gif" alt=":lol:" title="Laughing" /><!-- s:lol: --> <!-- s:lol: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_lol.gif" alt=":lol:" title="Laughing" /><!-- s:lol: -->

I heard a figure of 185 of the units have been put into pubs. I got to use one of them on a work night out to see how they worked. The pints were fine out of them although the Guinness seemed to be even colder than normal. You still have to go to the bar to get glasses though unless the bar staff drop you down extras! I think the idea they're going for is that the tables will be the best seats in the pub - right in front of the big screen for live sport.

anyway fingers crossed when they're being scrapped in 12 months time maybe Silenus can buy one from Diageo and turn it into a Pour you own Hooker unit!

These units are already available through the proper suppliers, they need only be branded. No need to wait 12 months <!-- s8) --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_cool.gif" alt="8)" title="Cool" /><!-- s8) -->
