Perrys brewery in Rathdowney, County Laois held the Royal Warrant as brewers to the Queen ( Victoria )
Their standard Ale was stronger than Smithwicks, and it was the contract Ale served at the evening meal ( Commons ) in Trinity College. Two barrells were 'railed' to Kingsbridge station ( now Heuston) every week for Trinity.
The brewery closed in 1966, to be repaced by a meat plant in which Guinness was a shareholder.
The local Dáil deputies raised the matter in the Dáil, and during the inevitable heated exchanges the official Dáil record notes a contribution from ' a Deputy ' ( anonymous) as follows :
