Does anyone know if its easier to start up a microbrewery in the UK as opposed to Ireland and if so what are the differences?

Well just recently it emerged in these parts, that the NI revenue dont require a bond for excise duty if you agree to pay by direct debit, so thats one prety significant tick on the UK side.

Can you set up in the UK on your own property If you had a large out building or garage and can you sell direct to the public? I would like to start up a small microbrewery but I only really want to start really small scale brewing for festivals etc and sell more for the fun rather than as a buisness? My dad has quite a large bit of property in the UK and Id rather put it there than have to rent property in Ireland.

Phone the Inland Revenue and ask them.

Here, most of the problems are bureaucratic. If you phone the Revenue you probably won't get through to someone who knows anything about it. The bond isn't a financial roadblock, as you can take out an insurance policy instead, from a bank, which is also very bureaucratic.

From talking to some of the lads on Jim's it seems very easy to set up in the UK.
Especially (sp?) easy for small scale with a lot of guy's brewing like you aim to.
