Good blog post Séan. I like the simplicity of the principle to stop demonising alcohol and start stigmatising drunkenness.

Do you think, however, that advertising campaigns are sufficient to help internalise this principle? Do you have any other strategies in mind? (I realise that you can't fit everything in one post). Do you think that the change in attitudes to drink driving, for example, were a function of anything else beyond the ad campaigns?

Perhaps something like 'Friends don't let friends be dicks.'?

I think it is easier to get the next generation to change. People have a certain loyalty to their friends which stands in the way of judging them and stigmatising them for getting too drunk. Advertising has got to be part of it, but it won't be enough on its own.

I'm actually thinking of coming out of my non political cave and tracking down my local TD's. Asking them to explain why, instead of actually tackling this social problem, they are choosing to take this action which has so many flaws as to be laughable(if it wasn't so serious).
I intend to vote in the next election.

The other thing that no-one seems to have mentioned is that in countries where there are no problems with binge drinking alcohol is very often consumed with food.

It's very well to tell people not to drink so much that they'll be plastered, but they really need to be told there is an alternative way to consume alcohol, and that's with food. Eating and drinking together rarely ends up with an excessive amount of drink being consumed, for obvious reasons.

A couple of foreign friends of mine don't generally go to pubs here as they are too expensive and they don't serve food.
