Hops seeds & hop rhizomes 14 years 5 months ago #1

Hi folks , just looking for some advice. Is it possible to buy hop seeds or hop rhizomes in Ireland ? I have trawled the internet with no success.Regarding the hop rhizomes there seems to be an issue with the soil coming into Ireland , some companies in America wont post the rhizomes to certain states because of the same issue.

I just got mine delivered yesterday from www.essentiallyhops.co.uk. Very nice people to deal with. Worked out at about €15 each the rhizomes delivered and they have cascade (UK cascade mind but worth a shot). If you ask nicely on here, some of the existing growers might give you some rhizome cuttings. There's a thread on ingredients listing all the growers.

Seeds are no good to you as there's a 50% chance the plants will be male, which are no good for brewing and are illegal to cultivate.

Someone on the board might be able to sort you out with a rhizome.

So when do you plant the rhizomes? I thought you had to wai til spring? Or will you just keep it potted inside.

I havent a clue about gardening btw - I sprung a leak once, thats about it - and i ask this question on here all the time, but forget the answer.

There's no real activity between now and June. You just need to keep the moist if indoors, and protect them from very hard frost (the -10 degrees type) if outside.

I met with Amanda Barker (the owner) and her husband Mike during the summer. Lovely people and they live in a fabulous part of Kent.
