Off to Berlin! 15 years 2 months ago #1

I'm off to Berlin tomorrow for a few days with SWMBO and a few of her friends, should be good craic. Im going to try and get a nice glass or two and perhaps pick up some local craft stuff if I can escape the clutches of the "group holiday" for a bit...

I was at a lock-in in Spandau Brauhaus many moons ago. Was my introduction to Dunkel. I enjoyed it greatly!

If you're not afraid of sour beers; try Berliner Weiss if you can find it. The version mixed with woodruff syrup is the only naturally green beer. (And it's WEIRD!)

Dunno if I am afraid of it or not... Never had it! Will definitely try and find it, I've taken your recommendations and saved them to my phone so if I can find them, I will!

I'll be staying here... www.generatorhostels.com/en/berlin/

"Weiss" can also be written with an "S-set" so it can look like "Weiß" too.

There's only two brands to look out for: Kindl Weiss and Schultheiss. Both are owned by the "Dr. Oetker" people who make yogurt and musli and other food products; the fact that they make both Berliner Weiss and yogurt is interesting because they both require the use of lactobacillus. (If you happen to find a Schultheiss in bottle and aren't flying Ryanair back (And are checking a bag) I'd certainly be interested to try it as I've only ever been able to track down Kindl Weiss.

Even though there's only these two brands made by one company there's several different flavors available if you have it in Berlin because it's traditional to mix it with different flavored syrups. -It's only 3% ABV, is served in large wine-like glasses and traditionally drank with a straw; because of the low abv and acidic wine-ish flavor, and addition of flavored syrups it is popular with women and children but don't let that stop you!
