I'm guessing your back yard is small. If it gets decent sunlight, and you have a wall or trellis to leave it climb up, then you should be ok.

Tiny and what little bit of planting area there is has been staked out, by Betty, for things that look pretty, but have absolutely no use in brewing. I just don't understand her reasoning.

You'll have to reason with her. Hop plants have a tiny footprint, and will give you nice foliage for the late summer months.

You could suggest the addition of a nice hop garland for the house, may help persuade her

Those hops are huge!!! Are they Cascade (which I know has unusually large flowers)?
