Yes, this was also popular in some Waterford pubs especially The Woodman Bar. Some older lads used to mix it half and half with large guinness to give the stout a bit of a kick. I tried it once in my late teens but wasn't too keen on the taste at the time, thought it was like a condensed version of stout.

HISTORICAL RECREATION RECIPE TIME!
If only someone knew a librarian who might have ideas on where to start looking for such a recipe...

So, eh... who wants to tell Biertourist how strong Smithwick's Barley Wine was?

No volunteers?

OK, take a deep breath, Adam. Go to the calm place. Put style guidelines out of your mind.

Smithwick's Barley Wine was [size=40:3q52s07t]5.5[/size:3q52s07t]% ABV.

I'd say most Irish breweries made a barley wine at one time or the other. The Smithwick's one just lasted longer than the others.

Phoenix was indeed a "red ale" I have a Phoenix Beer label (from a pint bottle). Brewed in Ireland, Cherry's Breweries Ltd., Waterford. I note that it was only 4.0% (at least that version was). The label is probably from the 70's.
