Does anyone have The Porterhouse's "Little Black Book of Beer"? I picked up a copy at the Brewers on the Bay in Galway.

From Page 2: Malted barley, the main ingredient, is from Athy.

So, it looks like PH are using Irish malt.

(Must phone O'Hara's and ask them)

The malt referred to is from Greencore (as also used by Guinness.-Some of us did a grain group buy from them last year). This is base malt, I imagine the PH get their specialty malts elsewhere.

Axereal now, since Greencore sold it.

But we have confirmation now that the biggest Irish brewer (PH) is indeed using Irish pale malt, their main ingredient (after water).

It does beg the question that if all the ingredients in an Irish craft beer are English, is it not really just an English beer brewed in Ireland?

You could make that point if that's how you define an Irish beer. However many breweries all over the world import ingredients such as malt, hops and yeast to gain a certain flavour profile, so this approach is not unique to Irish breweries. If you were to limit yourself to available Irish malt, hops and yeast there wouldn't be much variety in the resulting beer.
