Not everything can be bought in bulk so when it all goes pear shaped come back and tell me how economically viable the bulk buys are then.
Like i said before, it's your own choice where you spend your money, all i wanted to do was point out what might not be obvious to everybody.

EoinMag, if you're gonna publically state that you feel you're being ripped off then i think it's fair that you tell us who it is you feel is ripping you off and how?[/quote:37qdceju]

Why should I do that? People can make their own decisions as to where they buy stuff, I'm not the one telling people where to buy stuff.

Ah I wasn't having a go at you Richie, and I know why you started a new thread. I was just making the point that to suggest that shopping around is immoral is just crazy.

Huh? Are you affiliated with HBC or something? Any time anybody suggests an alternative to them you always have a go.

And as for the point you're making about [i:2c9o7jdk]"the quality of service that we currently are lucky enough to receive"[/i:2c9o7jdk]. If the quality was that great well then people wouldn't feel the need to shop around. Do you buy everything from local suppliers regardless of price?

Taken to its logical extreme, the decision to always buy goods from the cheapest source will inevitably eliminate players from any market. This is why businesses don't compete on price alone; they also advertise and offer promotions. So I agree that some attention must be paid to the consequences of one's choices (whether these be moral or otherwise). I'm no market fundamentalist.

But what I don't like is the suggestion that if you source one particular ingredient from abroad, you are thereby guilty of failing to support indigenous businesses. I for one use the HBC all the time. In fact I spend quite a lot of my money there (just ask my girlfriend!). I have met some of the people who work in Mountmellick and I like them a lot. It's a fantastic business. The reality is that the odd bulk purchase from abroad hurts nobody in Ireland. In fact, it may help them. With all this grain to be brewed, I'll need to source auxiliary supplies (yeast, hops, extract, sanitizing solution etc.). And I'm pretty certain that the HBC will be top of my list.

I can't really speak about homebrew kit but 5 years ago I was looking to buy a new bike (a Giant XTC Comp). I rang around all the major bike stores in Dublin (Cyclelogical, Cycle Ways, Joe Daly, Hollingsworthless etc) and everyone of them quoted me the exact same price, none would offer any discount nor would they trade in my old bike (which was decent spec). I ended up buying the bike in England and even after shipping was taken into account, I still ended up saving over €500.

Firstly i didn't tell anybody where to spent their money!!
Secondly i didn't plug any home brew shop!
Thirdly, i never mentioned morals!
