Just wondering if anyone has a copy of Designing Great Beers: The Ultimate Guide to Brewing Classic Beer Styles[/url:1cpmwq1b], and if so, is it worth having?
I got this book a couple of months back and it's oustanding. It's got the history of all the major beer styles and extensive info on how to brew them. The introductory stuff on hops, malt, yeast and water is brilliant too. Much more info than can be found in the regular home brew books.
Grand job. Will be added to my shopping basket so Thanks.

Yes, it is a very good book.
The only problem with it is that a large proportion of the statistics relating to styles comes from entries into American Homebrew competions. That only gives information on what a population of Americans think they can do within a set of style guidelines to best win a competition, often with a style of beer that they are only likely to encounter on holidays to Europe.
However, he does include data from the Real Ale Drinker's Almanac which is likely to give a more accurate representation of the British ales at least.
I've found this book extremely useful over the years. Certainly a must for anyone wanting to move into designing their own recipies. It would suit anyone who enjoys the scientific approach to beer design. I spoke to the owner of www.beerinprint.com a couple of weeks ago and he has started stocking it again.
I heard it was well worth owning too, speaking of books, I just had Michael Jacksons "Great beer guide, 500 classic brews" delivered, only cost me less than €15 too from Amazon
