Like Biddy Early.
Or Tara's.

Oops.

I don't think we can just say it's all the fault of the Irish consumer. The Irish consumer is the product of an effective marketing campaign....oh and we are all sheep blahhhh, blahhhh. That's what happens when for generations the 10% of the population with any gumption get up off their arse and emigrate. I bet Australia and the USA are full of micro breweries.
Anyway I’m a hypocrite, I’ve a fridge full of Carlsberg...I’m so ashamed

The marketers need to sell the stuff -- we can't expect them to do otherwise. The customers don't have to buy it, however. They can buy something tasty instead.

This gets into a really odd area. We seem to be a complete anomoly in having a high standard of living and a low average IQ[/url:26owgh8d]. That whole argument is a massive can of worms though.

So using wikipedia as the arbiter of the objective truth.
Population
Ireland 2008 estimate 4,422,100[3]
opulation
australia 2009 estimate 21,585,178[4] (51st)

so they have 5 times more people.
beer consumed per capita[/url:26owgh8d]
2 Ireland 131.1 -7.1
4 Australia 109.9 -7.6
so 13:11. so for every 13 units of craft brew we drink they should drink 55 if they are as crafty as us.

I have not looked to see how much they consume but they do seem to have[/url:26owgh8d] well over 4 times the craft breweries we have[/url:26owgh8d].

How did people ever argue before wikipedia? So Australia seems to be craftier then here.

Possibly the homogeneity of the products available in the licensed premises across the country might be a factor.

If we had scenario where a significant amount of pubs had a tap or two that strayed from the norm maybe we might have a culture whereby consumers wouldn't be afraid of anything outside the main brands.

It's kind of like a self-fulfilling prophesy...

I'm so glad you have the energy to look these things up and do the maths. People of course argued before Wikipedia, it's just they had no real way of shutting the opponent up with facts (if that is Wikipedia can be believed). Here's another one for you. Guinness ship beer from Dublin all around the country. This must have a massive carbon footprint. What is the carbon footprint of a pint of Guinness that is attributable to it being shifted around the county and how would this compare to a pint of porter produced say within 20 km of the place it was to be drunk? Also then what is the needless carbon footprint of macro breweries in this country?

well guinnesses footprint might be lower than a local micro, just like NZ lamb[/url:2bjflckc]has a lower footprint than uk lamb even after shipping. i'll leave teh guinness calculations up to someone who has the time and inclination to find out
