Are you getting a Pint? 17 years 9 months ago #1

Having dropped and smashed my last [i:euht2e02]English[/i:euht2e02] pint glass I have been reduced to using an [i:euht2e02]Irish [/i:euht2e02]pint glass to drink my 500ml bottles of beer.

[b:euht2e02]But it won’t all fit in[/b:euht2e02]

This is because an Irish pint glass filled to the brim is fractionally less than a pint (either that or my measuring jug is marked wrongly) where as English pint glasses are designed to take a pint - plus the head.
This was a long running campaign by CAMRA back in the 80s and 90s to make this happen in UK. Is it time Ireland followed suit and stopped robbing drinkers especially where Guinness is concerned?

Fair measure? You'll be wanting fair pricing and decent beer next.

Guinnesss only charge for 88 pints. As a result the generous publicans charge less for a pint.
The greadier publicans will put pressure on managers to obtain 90 pints from a 50 litre keg, thus increasing profit.

BUT! the problem with draught guinness is that it is the lowest earning beer in any pub, on a percentage basis. It actually makes on average, 5-7% less per pint than any other pint, even smithwicks.

As a result of the biggest selling pint in any bar in ireland being the least profit productive, other draught products bear the profit making responsibility, thank you very much Guinness.

In other word's, No pub in the country would be likely to survive too long if they sold only Guinness.
This in turn causes problems with all other draught products, and if a publican/manager can squezze a little bit extra out of a keg, be it in liquid or profit form, they will certainly try.
Temple bar establishments, and other fancy gafs have been operating this way for a long time thanks to the power of Guinness, so i personally don't see a future for a glass that hold's a pint, and a head.
Sorry.

Cheers

Oh well have to get myself a new glass from UK sometine soon.

Did you hear of the Scotsman who ordered a pint in Temple bar and when it was placed on the bar he asked the barman could he fit a small whisky in the top of it? “Of course Sir no problem” ---- Well fill it up with beer then!

Westbrew, sorry to disappoint you but most English pint glasses hold just that, a pint. Sadly, the CAMRA campaign, still ongoing in fact, did not lead to success. I'm speaking from experience here, having lived a long time in UK. However, some publicans/breweries DO provide lined glass which take a pint to the line then leave room for the head.

I remember Wetherspoons trialling the lined glasses but they had to discontinue them because people kept asking for a top-up! Some of them just wouudn't accept that it was (probably for the first time) a full pint of liquid. It was generally policy to provide the top-up to avoid arguements, and eventually the increased costs to the company led to the discontinuation of the trial. Incidentally, well-trained bar staff, using a handpump, can easily fill a standard pint glass to brim with beer and the head standing proud above the glass and not spill any!

i can only imagine a bar persons response if i asked them to ditch the head and fill it to the brim....im sure i would be shortly finding another establishment to drink in
