Finally! I'm ready to brew again :) 17 years 10 months ago #1

Today saw the last piece of the puzzle come together. Went off with a friend and got 14 metres of copper for a monster chiller which was built and is now ready for my first brew day since moving to Germany. There's an article on the making of this in the publication machine already (i.e. TheBeerNut. I have no control any more! )

Anyway, here she is, click for a big view of 17 coils of copper goodness

The rest of my new kit has been building up over the past three or four weeks, the pride and joy probably being the 30 litre stainless steel boiler that has a very nice thermostat. It's basically a "canning" pot that has a juicing function. At least that's how I sold it to my wife I've tested the thermostat briefly, and I reckon it'll be good enough to use as a mash tun with some minor modifications. The rest is just standard stuff that i had to acquire after the split of the Larkfield Brewery. It was a bit like a divorce, with Kieron getting the chiller and bottle tree, and me getting the bottle rinser, syphon tubes and a big spoon

Anyway, tomorrow is brew day, after about four months away from the boiler. Wish me luck! I need this first IPA to be bloody tasty!

That IS a nice chiller.
Is it homemade, 6mm pipes ?

Viel Gluck mit deinen ersten Brau Tag, Adeptus !

I'm defo going make one of those chillers. Mine is but a small one and takes a while to cool down the 25 litres I usually brew. It'll shorten my brew day along with stabilising my beer all the better.

Vielen Dank!

Nein, das ist 10mm kupferrohr, wie meine letztes chiller[/url:2w5vprb7], und ja, selbst gemacht.

Man, my German is better than I thought. Or maybe it isn't!

I've never seen 6mm pipes, but I reckon they'd be a bit too pliable. The 10mm is pretty solid, but still easy to bend by hand. I know Séan made one using 8mm pipe, so that's also a good option. In fact, all discussed under the thread linked above.

This one is a bit of a monster though. I asked for 12 metres of pipe, and the guy was too lazy to measure it, so it ended up I got 14 metres. So it's pretty heavy. I'll see if I can get some copper wire to space the coils a bit and make it a little more sturdy. The last one Kieron and I made was very neat and tidy. THis one has a larger diameter, so I feel it needs a little something extra to make it neater. Still, I'm delighted with it! There's an illustrated guide to making it on its way to the Knowledgebase, so it'll be available soon. I remembered to take photos this time round

About the size I was wrong : mine is also 10mm OD as well.. How id you come with the 12m length ? I expect there is is a length of pipe above which the chiller doesn't gain efficiency, am I right ?
