Thomas has pointed out that Heineken are pumping a lot of money into the UK to gain a foothold. A hold that would be much bigger the Ireland and spoons are one of their few big clients estates.

Over 47000 pubs in the UK, so Heineken still have plenty of scope for expansion there without Wetherspoons.

EDIT: Quick look at Heineken's UK market performance. They're the Number 1 in the UK with 22% of the beer market share, with a turnover of £1.6 billion in the UK in 2012. Wetherspoons account was worth £60 million.

That figure takes in all Heineken UK's turnover though, I'm solely talking about sales of draught Heineken alone.

New spoons menu up btw. <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="scontent-b-lhr.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xap1...4b6b&oe=5507A06D">scontent-b-lhr.xx.fbcdn.net/hph ... e=5507A06D

IMHO Wetherspoons can do very well in Ireland with no Diageo and Heineken. They can be got everywhere anyway. Something a bit different, better and considerably cheaper will always work. They will have to work a bit harder to get more Irish cask in and do a rotating craft keg beer (which I've never seen in the UK)

You seem to be dismissing the impact of this. They just lost 4% of their UK business, possibly their largest single account. It's a massive issue for Heineken.

Also it's not about 7000 pubs in Ireland vs 900 pubs in the UK. The 7000 pubs here don't act in unison, they're virtually all small owner-managed businesses. And the vast majority of them will never feel the impact of a Spoons pub near them.
