Really? I wouldnt have said the red was the same, I thought the old 330 was a nicer ale[/quote:1ctkw1r9]

Funny I said the same. I thought the 330ml was a bit sweeter and like you I preferred it (or so I think).

But no, I put it to Liam Hanlon and he swore they were the same. Maybe they switched malsters for the speciality malts or something tho.

I asked Seamus the same question and he said they were slightly different receipes! However, I also asked what lab equipment they had and I was told none! 5 minutes later when I asked about yeast vitality I was told the check yeast everyday under the microscope!!!

If I were to brew and sell one to aldi I would make sure the receipe would be different just in case it ever went legal. That way you can protect the main brand.

I think it is great for Carlow. After all these years they have survived thanks mainly to exports so to be hitting nearly every supermarket chain now is fantastic even though it is an own brand in Aldi thus taking the brand name away from regular Joes.

Better news is that Carlow's exporting less now (I think it's 60% of output exported) as the home market is taking more of their product. They are hoping to expand the brewery but they are close to the 'legal' limit of what defines a craft brewery.

Aldi/O'Shea's are different to O'Hara's branded ones.

That's interesting about the yeast. Did he tell you what ones they use?

AFIK they use Nottingham for everything. They by it in 500g packs and use for 8 generations. I have to say they seemed very coy about giving out some information, but then again they do have to protect their own interest.
