i was really curious as to what that text on the glass means
so off to a internet translator with me!
i was expecting and hoping for something really deep and "monk-ish" that eludes to how special the beer is or the history of it....
not quite what i got but i laughed my ass off when
I discovered it says "you helped build the abbey!"
good auld westy monks..straightforward as ever!

cheers

[b:3p1bqmge]ad aedificandam abbatiam adiuvi[/b:3p1bqmge] means [i:3p1bqmge]I Helped to build the abbey[/i:3p1bqmge]
It means the glass you are drinking out of helps building the abbey.
The whole reason for the bricks is rebuilding the abbey which is needed.
The sacred vows they have taken forbid the monks to make a profit and they have very few means to restore the abbey to its former glory.

That's quite a reaction to translating one word wrong.

"I Helped to build the abbey" either refers to (a) The purchaser of the beer, i.e. the person reading it; or less likely (b) The monks themselves.

If (a) then this means exactly the same thing as what fourmations posted.

If (b) then this means the monks are boasting which is against their vows, as you say.

Would you care to explain your argument?

Everybody calm down!
I also laughed when I read the text on the glass (not on the bottle). It's a bit of humour, nothing more![url:3icq299b]http://img.tapatalk.com/5f53c47d-e905-98a1.jpg[/url:3icq299b]

The [b:1xgugb1t]I[/b:1xgugb1t] in this case would be the glass.
By purchasing a brick and thus the glasses you help rebuilding the abbey. The glass (in this case seen as the person uttering the words) is directly helping to build the abbey. The Westvleteren monks are known for leaving funny quotes and texts.
