hi

OP here, im not going to get into this much
but i find this an astonishing reaction

as stated, I did not insult anyone or their faith for a second and my translation faux-pas is really not that controversial, the text is clearly a "thank you" to the purchaser for helping rebuild the abbey by purchaing the beer (i humbly apologise on behalf of google translate for any errors! <!-- s:roll: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_rolleyes.gif" alt="" title="Rolling Eyes" /><!-- s:roll: --> )

i'm holding my tongue here by not addressing and subsequently picking apart the shocking assumptions and insults posed in this bizzare rant

EDIT: you have posted since i started this post....
that's what i was talking about with the straightforward humour, why did you get so heated about the whole thing???

Sorry I completely misread your post last night and thought you were making fun of the monks. I apologize for my rant but typed without thinking first. Stupid but I'm quite passionate about the subject. For some strange reason some people in Belgium want to get rid of the church altogether but do not want to get rid of Trappist beers. Monastic life has always been under fire and it's not hard to stick to it in this day and age. The monks have worked very hard to maintain their way of life and unlike commercial breweries this beer is brewed by their love of God. Initially they started brewing and making cheese to provide travelers with a bed, food and drink. I'm not sure what their reaction will be if I would seek shelter for the night and demand beer and cheese but I think they would still provide it.
Their way of life is under threat though and having these bricks is an extraordinary step. They have not done this before and never needed to. The fact that it is necessary these days to give up certain principles shows how hard it is to maintain their way of life. I hope the Trappist order will forever exist but there are less and less people signing up for monastic life these days.

I think there are legitimate reasons why people in Belgium may have mixed feelings in this area, much like people in this country.

I'm aware that not every Catholic or priest is a saint and that not all that the church does is correct.
To quote Father Ted:
[b:2sps5art]"If theres 100 Million priests in the world, and 10% of them are paedophiles, that's still only 10 Million."[/b:2sps5art]

Scientific fact is that not 10% of all humans seem to have pedophile tendencies but most don't give into that, nor does 10% of all priests. The sad fact is that it's a small number of priests but it would be really stupid to think it would't ever happen. Just like not all teachers or policemen are guilty for the few.
It happens and it's unfortunate and it's even more unfortunate that some bishops and priests have done their best to cover it up but again it happens in all professions. I'm also not a big fan of of some of the church's view another issues like abortion or contraception, but do people really expect the pope to stand up and say: "Let's all copulate with as many people as we can and use condoms so you won't get terrible diseases and if you do happen to get pregnant let it be ripped from your womb." ?
The church believes marriage is a sacred bond and so do I. I'm not saying one should forbid condoms but they can hardly say they're great.
I think the last pope, John Paul II, was much better but part of my faith is that it will be tested. In the end I think there are still more good sides to the Catholic faith than bad ones and it's much better than any other religion.
Unfortunately, in this quick consumption, capitalist society there is no longer a need for salvation or religion. Greed and money is all that counts.
Is it coincidence the church lost it's position in Ireland as the Celtic tiger roared its devious head?
