It's not.

La Trappe quad certainly in my recollection is MUCH, MUCH, MUUUUCCH sweeter. (And the difficult-to-find oak-aged La Trappe quad seems even sweeter, if that's possible.)

Westvleteren 12 is pretty dry considering it's ABV and original gravity (lots of brewing syrup & a bit of dehusked belgian black malt helps dry it out and make it seem even drier than it is).

The La Trappe quad is more like a modern American re-envisioning of the other Belgian "12"/"ABT"/"Belgian Strong Dark Ales"/"Quads", in my opinion. -Their entire brewery is more of an "Abbey brewery" in product and culture than a full "Trappist" brewery, in my opinion, despite their history and the fact that they've in recent years been officially designated as a Trappist brewery.

Having said that I do like a lot of their beers and I like that they're fairly easy to get a hold of an generally less expensive than their Belgian counterparts but the Dubbel and "Quad" (which seems to be a modern American invented term for these beers(and the fact that they now use it also helps to concrete their status in my mind as an "Abbey" brewery with a Trappist designation on paper)) do seem to be firmly on the sweet side.

-And if by some miracle you don't love the Westvleteren 12, you can trade it on the internet for essentially any beer you can imagine; there's no unaged beer worth more in trade.

Reportedly (Beer Advocate mag) Shelton Bros (US) will distribute 7760 of the W12 bricks. If they are the only designated importer, then that's not very many.

I think the mythology associated with these beers is set to continue!
