TOPIC:

Leann Follain 14 years 5 months ago #1

Had a bottle of this ages ago and didn't think a lot of it, but I bought a bottle again recently as I had heard it had changed since it was originally launched.

This time around I thought on first gulp that it was bordering on epic, but by the time I got to the end of the bottle I was feeling the epicness had been over powered by a sweetness that didn't make me feel like having another bottle.

I'm on a bit of a quest to find the most epic stout I can for the common man (i.e. €12 bottles need not apply) and so far it's probably been Fuller's Past Masters Double Stout.

Anyone else feel Leann Follain has overshot the mark a bit?

I believe that "Epic" beers are self destructing in a drinking mans world

The amazing property that beer has is that you can keep on drinking it long after you have "quenched the thirst"!

Nobody can drink say 10 pints of water ( this CAN be fatal ) or 5 litres of 7-up - but beer due to the magic hoppy dryness ( tannins ) allow a lot more beer to be consumed than water.

OK, ABV is a problem but for lighter beers ( 3.5 to 4.5 abv ) then with practise ...

The sooper strong flavoured epic beers are not quaffable in this quantity as very soon the palate ( and the liver as most are high in ABV ) says "Enough Already"

However, like all good things, in moderation they are to be enjoyed

I asked Seamus (O'Hara) if the recipe had changed and he told me that no, it was the same recipe and process since the first brew.

And you believed him? There were rumours that the first one was a batch of Celebration (I think) that took a left turn somewhere at the fermentation stage. I found it a bit interesting, but slightly stale[/url:6b0jp5fo].

edit:
just re-read the comments, and it was Thom who mentioned this was originally Celebration gone bad. Or different.

So how many batches have been made since then? :/

I've always found Seamus to be a straight-up and decent guy. I'm prepared to believe what he tells me until something comes along to tell me otherwise.

I think we are talking about 3 great beers here! I had past masters for the first time today and loved it! Am also a big fan of Celebration and Leann Follain!
