Czech Beers ( actual ) in The Abbots Ale house 14 years 8 months ago #1

called in today for a quick browse in the abbots and what did I see only bottles of Gambrinus .( a fine example of a czech lager ) they also have Kozel , which I'm not familiar with , but which is a plzen beer .

Nice to see them there ( so I bought a few of each )

Let ye know hoe they go !!

Kozel was once a small independent but not any longer.

Gambrinus is just not worth drinking, well in my opinion.

Stick with Budvar and Pilsner Urquell and if you come across Herold, especially the dark lager, then drink it!

I quite enjoyed Gambrinus 10° in Bratislava, where it was usually 90c a pint. It's Urquell's budget brand, the Amstel/Tuborg to Urquell's Heineken/Carlsberg.

Is that different to the usual stuff you get on tap in Prague or what we get here in places like The Czech Inn?

All the same, AFAIK. There are a few beers in the Gambrinus stable, but I think the 10° is the one we get here.

I'd definitely prefer the Gambrinus to Budvar or Urquell

But yeah Herold is the better than those , it's really nice .

Something in one of those last night gave me unmerciful indigestion this morning though .

The Kozel had less flavour in it than the Gambrinus .

In fairness though , iirc Gambrinus is the "Germanic" Czech beer ,
I went to their restaraunt in prague and it was all done up for the tourists , menu was all German food and the lot .
