Saw this today in my local Dunnes. Its the first time I can remember seeing a (comparitively) non-macro beer priced close to whats charged north of the border. Viva la recession!

Though it's a lovely beer: great to see it for that sort of money, and even better that Dunnes reckon there's a market for this sort of thing. It bodes well for ale in Ireland generally.

Well, indirectly. I think it's still badged as Wychwood.

Yes, they're very careful about maintaining the separate identity of their brands. They sponsored the glassware at the Great British Beer Festival this year and it looked like an F1 driver's jacket with all the logos.

But it doesn't make them any less macro. I bet they produce more Wychwood beer than Diageo produces Smithwick's.

... but less than Heino or Bud...

Figures I've seen say 50k barrels per year out of Wychwood, versus 1m barrels from Smithwicks, although the majority of the latter is actually Bud under license and several other beers.

This is against 50m per year from St James Gate, for reference.

I mention it not to be pedantic (well, not [i:663tpp26]just[/i:663tpp26] to be pedantic) but because I've read comments similar to TBN's re:Marston's about Sam Adams and Sierra Nevada not being craft anymore because they're too big, when in actual fact they're still a fraction the size of Bud or Coors.
