I think Irish Pale Ale can be its own style with some specific adjustments. I just brewed my own version of an Irish golden ale. Mine is 2/3 barley malt and 1/3 wheat malt. You keep the lighter color and it has a distinct character from an English or American versions. I then used Kent Goldings for bittering and American Cascade hops for aroma, 30 IBUs. I used an English yeast and brewed it to a strength of 5%. It is rich and bready with light citrus hoppiness. Add a bit of caramel malt and you have an Irish Pale Ale and not a Irish Gold.
