Ask for a half and half. That seems to be less offensive. Dublin people do seem to object to the black and tan thing. Probably all these bloody Sinn Fein supporters in the working class areas!

I've tried to make a few half and halfs but never got the desired visual effect or taste. Tried Smithwicks, Guinness, Harp and I think Murphys. I suppose the problem is starting off with piss-poor ingredients and then sure why waste a €3.50 500ml bottle of some nice stout on a gimmick!

It works on gravity difference. The lower layer here has an OG of 1.074 and the upper 1.051.

Hmmm interesting, we never poured them to stay as seperate layers, always mixed them in the pour, that in itself was hard as the Co2 in the Smithwicks caused a huge head on the nitro Guinness.

Beamish advertise the black and tan as a drink to order in the States as far as I know. I came across ads and even some fancy metal umbrella type spoon to help you make the half and half effect.

Beamish? Really? The company who distributed both Guinness and Bass, and who are responsible for the black and tan's popularity in the US, used to hand them out. I wonder what the recommended mixer for Beamish was. Newkie Brown?
