Maybe there is the Smithwicks stigma, but on the other hand Rebel Red is a great seller, as, I would presume, is Porterhouse Red.
Now you could argue that if someone has gone as far as going into a brewpub they're being far more adventurous than your average drinker, but I don't think there are that many (relatively) young Smithwicks drinkers out there that are simply converting to another red. I think it does offer itself as an alternative without being so completely different (like Hooker might).

But, yes they're on the market, so not a new-to-market style. In that case surely the golden ale is the one.

Golden Ale would be a relatively 'safe' bet as the colour would not scare away lager drinkers and the taste would not be too radical a departure either. It's no coincidence that the big sellers in brewpubs are often the blonde/golden ales. They're very definitely gateway beers.

i go a dark ale or a Schwarzbier. To get the younger drinker it would be as much image as taste ie a catchy name as in galway hooker! and some on controversial advertising eg It gives you virility or the like (seems to have worked for one stout co.)
eg an ale called Viagrale would probably sell in trendy pubs even if it was bad ...at the well beer fest that duff beer was flying out the door.

Blarney Blonde is a big seller here for that reason, and i agree that there should be more golden ales available.

I'd love to see a Lambic on sale..... bring on the sourness!

Me too, but I could not see much of a market outside the hardcore beer geek fringe.
