Actually, it wasn't given to me. When Aidan came with the last delivery, i helped him unload and the kegs were too heavy to lift back into the van <!-- s8) --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_cool.gif" alt="8)" title="Cool" /><!-- s8) -->

Glad to see someone else didn't like it. Though I feel slightly disloyal to Aidan and his brewery, I have to say that my dad and I thought it tasted mainly like it had been brewed from old coffee grounds.

Now, if it had been more of a traditional porter in depth, colour and mouthfeel, I think that would have gone a long way to improving it - at least as far as my taste is concerned. But as it stands was just too not-porter for me.

This beer is a very clear of example of the flavour depth you can get from cask conditioning that just doesn't come out in the keg. On cask it's much better and the coffee smoothness is much more pronounced.

Hopefully i am going to try it to night, it just seem there is confusion between porters and stouts and Guniness is what people associate for both. Porters are a different beast to stouts and even Guinness is just an off shoot of stouts.

not sure about the whole coffee thing, but i do applaud there effect not to fall into the usual Guinness trap that so may do and produce something different for the Irish market.

I think I have at least enough common sense not to expect Guinness when I have a porter.

I was comparing it to other porters I have tasted, such as St Peter's Old Style, some of the one brewed by folks here, and so on. I admit I'm no expert on the style - I'm not an expert on any style - but at least I know enough to not knowingly compare apples and oranges.

I didn't mean to imply it wasn't a porter (though it isn't what I have been led to expect from other things calling themselves porter) just that it isn't what I like in a porter.
