I came across the above in the Abbot alehouse by chance recently. Had never even heard of it! Read some background re same and beer reviews on Beeradvocate (not a member I hasten to add!). Most reviews I read spoke most highly of this drink. Sampled my first bottle last night and it was indeed superb. Had it in a Westmalle glass, at least a proper trappsit-type glass. Blond robust beer is how it is described and that it sure is. It is brewed since the 1990's in the same brewery that Kwak comes from. I see it is available on draught as well as in bottle. Draught would be heaven altogether. It is not brewed in an abbey or monastery but is apparently and on a 17th century Carmelite recipe. I would definitely rate it as a superb beer. I do not think it is very well-known here. A definite gem.

Nice beer all right, to be honest most triple's and beligan strong beers are designedfor bottle conditioning and not draught, althought the are some exceptions

if your can ever get you hands on St. Feuillien rang the great, CAMRA ranked them over a number of Trappist beers last year

It's good, but I still have a preference for Westmalle for the extra spice.

I do like Tripel Karmaliet; it's a three grain brew, and is very popular in parts of Belgium. I picked up an armful of them from Sinsbury's of Sprucefield last year.

And here is a short story; A little over a year ago I dropped into an off-licence in the Kilmacud/Stillorgan area. I was looking for Árainn Mhór brews at the time. They didn't have them, but I spotted some Tripel Karmaliet and went to pay for them saying "I'll just have these Tripel Karmaliets". The young girl on the till turned towards the ciggies saying "And you want a pack of Camel Lights as well?"

I couldn't think of anything to say after that!

I think it's a splendid beer. I'd rank it ahead of Westmalle tripel (and indeed probably every other tripel I've tried). It's got a really special mouthfeel which sets it apart from the others.
