RSS feed 18 years 6 months ago #1

I'm shockin' lazy, and usually use reader.google.com for reading websites...any chance you could install a phpBB to RSS tool ? There are loads floating around, I can give you one if you want...just a single file.

I've only just noticed that the feed only runs from the main site. Yes: good idea.

Lazy sods

I'll have a look when I'm less under the influence.

Ok, I've added one[/url:1m5x3h6n] (the simplest I could find) temporarily to the site for you to look at. I'm unconvinced about the value of an RSS feed on a forum as it's all out of context and doesn't follow the flow of a topic. Viewing posts since last visit[/url:1m5x3h6n] may be more useful. I'll have to assess what it's doing to DB traffic over time too. If it's ok I'll add an RSS icon to the forum.

I should point out that the front end of the site and the forum component are actually completely seperate. It's just through the magic of a bridge and graphics that it apppears the same, hence why the front page RSS feeds do not include forum topics.

Thank you. I've subscribed and will let you know if I think it's worth keeping.

I don't have a problem with it being all out of context as there aren't *that* many threads to keep track of. Viewing posts since last visit is fine for when one first arrives at the site and is catching up, but for notifications during the day I much prefer an RSS notification to an e-mail.

I'm using FeedReader as my desktop aggregator, incidentally.

And while we're on the subject of The Two Sites (well you brought it up ), is there a reason why pages on the main site are narrower than the forum? Can the tables (or divs or whatever you young folk use these days) be set to behave the same way, widthwise? I think the left and right margins of the main site pages are wasted.

I used Google Reader, and it helps me get through maybe 1300 articles a day (many of which I just skim through). Between that, and maybe 300 conversations a day through email, it's nice to optimise anything you can!
