Irish homebrew - cheaper to buy off english version 14 years 2 days ago #1

I have noticed on of the Irish homebrew shops also have a .co.uk site also. By the time you convert from sterling to euro it is actually cheaper to buy from the english site! You can save up to €3 on a 3kg bag of extract and €5 on a recommissioned corny keg. Also if you spend more than £70 delivery is free. Has anyone in Ireland bought from the English version of the website in oder to avail of these cheaper prices?

Just saw this.
I havent looked at the site in great detail but...
Sterling prices obviously fluctuate against the euro.
So it wouldnt be feasible to track one price against the other.
The market for extract product may be stronger over in UK etc etc
Also, I'd say the delivey is only free on UK mainland.
Im not sure whether they've premises over yonder or if its shipped from here...but
I dont think, in this example, there's a deliberate attempt to rip irish people off v UKish people.
The stuff you get in Ireland likely originates in UK any way so there is a cost incurred in shipping it here.

This example is contrary to other examples of companies operating in both countries. Usually they come over here from the UK and rip us off. Not talking homebrew here...supermarkets, clothing chains etc
In this case the company is originally an irish company operating in, lets face it, a very small limited (but hopefully growing) market.
The attempt was to increase their revenue by moving into the UK market.
Cant begrudge anyone that, we all have bills to pay.

PS: I've no allegiance/connection to said (or unsaid) company. Other than using them now n again to buy stuff off.

There's a legal requirement for online shops to give their bricks and mortar address, so that's easily checked.

A lot of good points James. Did not mean to suggest this company is trying to rip Irish people off. As you said the currency fluctuations cannot be helped. Did not consider stock coming from UK so sending direct from supplier would be cheaper. In fairness the company would be a great loss for me personally as I like to go the shop every second or third order. The address on the English site is the same as the Irish. Part of the question on my part was due to the fact I am hoping to get a corny setup and seen this as a potential way to save money. They will be getting the business either way for my first one but just trying to get best deal possible.

Looks like they might be actually shipping from Ireland so.

In fairness, delivery to uk is listed on the irish site as 10 euro.
Which is close-ish to 6.95 sterling, which is quoted on the UK site.

Id say its just an attempt to get more UK custom by creating a .co.uk site and the price differences are due to the conversion issues.

Talk to them, they might do you a deal based on your findings!!

Ah to be fair to them I have never had a problem with them (quite the opposite) and as you say they may be only trying to drum up business. As i just noticed this I was wondering if other people had noticed. I would not begrudge €20 per say and would not like to see them forced out of Irish market. As there is no shop in Dublin it only takes me 40 minutes to travel from the house to the sjop. It used to take that to get to rathmines if I neefed anything on brew day.
