BeoirFinder App II- Android version available for testin 14 years 1 month ago #19

Just tried a Vodafone Smart -- same thing, GPS icon stays flashing, fire up a Task Manager and I can see the app is still running.[/quote:6dmfrsjz]

Strange because debug is showing it going through OnDestroy in the top level Activity. There shouldn't be any coming back after that... Maybe different versions of Android handle this event differently.

Having backed out of it, I haven't touched the phone in about 5 mins there now, and it still shows. Using 560kb application and 556kb data storage.

I have a task manager yeah - but its definitely gone.

The gps icon stays flashing on mine when you enable it (gps) and it never actually connects. Dont think its the app's job to switch it off anyway, cos it didnt switch it on in the 1st place. My sat nav app doesnt turn it off when its finished it either.

Apparently, Android gets to decide whether or not to close the application on exit. With v2.1.0 (which I'm using and the base platform the App was written for) the app is always closed (the rest why I'm seeing the OnDestroy being called).

It turns out that this is the 'correct' and 'official' way for Android Apps to be written. I'm guessing that all that needs to be done to the BeoirFinder app is to get rid of the splashscreen and to put the locationManager into Sleep when the app goes into the background.

If I hit the Home button (as opposed to the back button) I get straight back to the home sreen and the app is still running in task manager. But thats what i'd expect.

Funnily enough I find that any app that doesn't have a specific Exit option generally tends to stay running in the background.

The Dublin Bus[/url:203oqswi] one is notorious for this as your phone will get hot and your battery will be gone in no time!
