Royal Canal steam excursions pass my house every now and again. They have beer on board, and I would definitely be on more of them if they had nice beer!

It's funny you should mention that as the Royal Canal has all recently re-opened to navigation, and you are right, canal (and also river) cruises are indeed very laid back, and a great way to pass the time.
But no, I was talking about these, which pass the back of my house now and again, one or two of which I've been on:
The Midland & Great Western Railway followed the Royal Canal for quite a bit of the way from Dublin (if not all) and eventually MGWR ended up owning the canal.
This is also available for hire and would make a great day out (it's also in my home town, easily accessible by train and bus <!-- s:) --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_smile.gif" alt="" title="Smile" /><!-- s:) --> )...
