I've a bottle of '97 Midleton VR sitting across the room from me right now. I used to love the stuff, but I have to say, I didn't enjoy the last one I had as much as I thought I would. A guy in work has been spoiling me with his bloody whisky collection...

<edit>
Of course, now I have some in a glass <!-- s:D --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_biggrin.gif" alt=":D" title="Very Happy" /><!-- s:D --> Oh, the power of suggestion. Actually, I'm recalling why I used to like it. An almost buttery, salty (popcorn?), minty finish, thought it's a little lighter and more "ethanolic" (feels like it's evaporating off my tongue), than I recalled. Only other whiskey I have in stock is an unopened bottle of Black Bush somewhere...

Well call me unpatriotic but I don't think any of the irish whiskies come within a sniff of [i:199737rn]any[/i:199737rn] scotch single malt, except the stuff from Cooley which is excellent, and perhaps redbreast, though I prefer it smokier. Our standard whiskies are fine as run of the mill drinkers, and black bush is my favourite.

also, and sorry for evangelising, but I recently made an exciting discovery- Sainsbury's "Irish Single Malt" own brand stuff is actually made by cooley, and it's only something like £12. very nice, peaty.

Love the Cooley/Kilbeggan stuff.

Connemara is lovely.

Hmmmm, after reading the last couple of posts, I want to nip out and buy a bottle of a smokey whiskey. I wonder if it's frowned upon to be thinking of whiskey at 10am! <!-- s:P --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_razz.gif" alt=":P" title="Razz" /><!-- s:P -->

I agree with Richie though, single malt scotch is definitely the way to go. I'll have to swing by Celtic Whiskey shop on my way home this evening, which isn't really on my way!
