Tulamore Spew is off the mark for being a good Irish, for me anyway. Green Spot is over priced for a blended Pure Pot Still, but for anyone with 45eu to spend, Redbreast 12yr is the best for money you'll spend with regards to qualityand value. The dogs nuts, if you're splashin the cash is Jameson 18yr. About 120eu, but only 77eu if you've past through duty free recently

Actually It is only €35 in the off license at the Silver Granite in Palmerstown. Carry Out I think, or at least it was last time I bought some

yeah greenspot is pretty overpriced. They obviously don't underrate themselves. Nice whiskey though.[/quote:11d6fn3i]

Weird thing is it's too overpriced by the measure in Bull and Castle. I think it's around the same price as the other normal IDL whiskeys and is cheaper than whiskeys with an age statement. Not worth €45 at all in my opinion but it's significantly different that they kinda have the market tied up. It's that or Redbreast and IDL upped the price of that two years ago over night.

It was a great evening with about 40-45 people jammed into a little conference room in the basement of brooks hotel, which I should say is a very nice hotel. The event took the form of a blind tasting of 6 Irish whiskeys and each participant had to guess what each one was from a list of 8.

While each whiskey was being sampled, mini presentations on the history and processes and types of whiskey were given by one of the organisers, and each segment was finished with a discussion on the whiskey in the glass at the time. Participants were encouraged to describe what they smelt and tasted and what they saw, with the organisers gently suggesting the notes that they were picking up in the whiskey.

Once the discussions were over, it was time to show your knowlsedge, or ignorance in my case, in what I can only describe as under-educated guess work. I got 2 out of the 6 right, which i'm happy enough with, so don't ruin it by analysing the odds of randomly picking 2 out of 6 right anyway!

There was also a pick your favourite, which for me and about 11-12 others was Power's. It was the most popular choice at our tasting and at the previous irish whiskey tasting, so I must buy some for once instead of glossing over it without thought.

The evening finished with a taste of Midleton, but it too was tasted blind before being revealed. Blind, I wouldn't have put it down as a very expensive whiskey, and was shocked when it was revealed. It goes to show that perception plays a large part in taste.

It was a great evening overall and good fun. I'll definitely be along to the next one.[/quote:11d6fn3i]

Middleton VR is very overrated considering its price.

Powers is a gem. Standard stuff is great for drinking everyday.

If anyone is a bit hesitant of Scottish whiskies due to the peaty nature then try something like a Glenmorangie. It's delish, slighty fruity and kinda refreshing.

I hate that we get so ripped off with IRish whiskey. They should be trying to get people into drinking more different variations but there's this notion that quality is linked to price so if you pay more you of course get your value. Redbreast was 35quid and over night became 45.

O'Briens have a 700ml bottle of 12yr Jameson at about €26 which is a deal too good to be true but amazingly it is. Fantastic whiskey and incomparable to the no-age statement stuff that's advertised.
