I agree much better than a shrug and been told "company policy "

Would have stayed if he had explained it like Geoff .

on a side note ...when stein is mentioned are they the actual clay stoneware vessel or the standard Bavarian 1L glass? I think a Masskrug can be a 1L stein if it is made of clay else its just a Masskrug or Mass if made of glass.

PS : Im not a fan of 1L servings even in Munich at the fests. Too much, gets too warm and too heavy.

stein = stone (eg earthenware/stoneware ) Krug = crock or containing vessel
Steinkrug = lit:"the stone vessel"

Maß or Mass = weight / measure

Masskrug =lit:" measure crock" but always taken now to mean the 1L glass vessel (-so despised amoung the ICB members apparently )

can be masculine or feminine
"eine Mass" (f) or "ein Mass"(m)
(depending on which part of Germany or Austria you come from )
plurals dont change - eine mass = one ,zwei mass = two ,[i:3pdvw54p]not zwei massen[/i:3pdvw54p]

I spoke to some friends from Munich about this and they maintain that a stein is a clay vessel and a mass is a 1L vessel usually glass as seen at Oktoberfest. If it is a Stein then it can be .5 or 1L but must be clay.

And you know the germans for being particular
