I was in last night, and they seemed to stop serving steins after around 11 - we were told we could have two halves instead. Is that just lack of glasses, or what was the story? They did seem to be serving the oktoberfest stuff in steins before then though, so no idea what the story with that policy is.

Hi Lads, i'll be quite happy to explain.

The IFSC crew are not goverened by the same "responsible serving of alcohol policy" that regular bars are required to follow.

Paulaner Octoberfest is quite strong, so it is served in responsible quantities.

The local Licensing Sergeant recieved a complaint from a local resident that we were serving alcohol irresponsibly, and that our customers were causing problems late at night with regards to noise and litter, and of course pavement pizza, which we must clean up ourselves. I'm sure you'll agree that this not a pretty job to faced with at 3am, indoors or outdoors.
This led to an agreement with the Garda, that we serve responsibly or face an objection to our license, not to mention that we would have our outside furniture license revoked.

This situation is monitored closely by the proprietors, and i am personally responsible to see that we operate within ANY house policy set out by the Garda, residents, or the guy who pays my wage.

I am sorry if you think we don't do things properly around here, but blame the idiots who drink too much and ruin it for everyone else.

It's also a shame that hard working barstaff are sold as useless drones, when they are only doing their job.

Actually about the Stein glasses, late at night they become the most dangerous objects to place in the hands of idiots, so again we all lose out.

I hope this helps.

Geoff

Hmm thats odd since it was about 3pm when I went in and was not allowed a "Stein" of Paulaner ,were you drinking Paulaner or something not strong enough to be rationed ?
I went down to the Porterhouse after that and got one no problem - guess the Sargent did not get a complaint about them !

The only place those dreadful buckets of warm swill are used in Germany is to serve tourists at the oktoberfest, they're an easy glass to make a lot of money on as a barman there too cos of short pouring.
Drink German beer in small stemmed or handled glasses so you don't warm it up and are always drinking a chilled beer as nature intended

I appreciate it's a part of the atmosphere, but it's disrepect to the beer to some extent too.

Well it was billed as the Pauaner Oktoberfest after all !

Must admit I do prefer they way they serve the beer in smaller portions in the Northern parts but I have been in Munich and Southern Germany a lot and most big beerhalles serve Masskrugs in Winter or Summer and most of the customers seem to speak German .

Biermatt, some bars attract more attention than others due to being close to a residential property, a hotel for example, or apartments above a shop being another one, you've been here, look across the street and see what i see.

But theres no way you can compare two seperate business', just because the law has taken an interest in one more than the other.

As any of the ICB'ers who have spent time in my company will tell you, i do my best for the beer community.

I fight for the best prices, i convince the owners that 20+ homebrewers descending upon us once a month with their own beer IS a good thing.

I respond to complaints/suggestions and do my best to make things better, but i'm also well aware that i cannot please everybody. I would hate to think of the kind of nightmare i would be involved in if i had to run a business to please everyone.

As requested, you have recieved an explanation, but i'm always available for a face to face conversation over a good beer, responsibly of course!
