I must have met those guys at EBBC12 last month. Good site for those heading to Poland.

Jacob,

Thanks for all that, unfortunately I only got to try one of these The Pinta Smoked Beer - dymy marcowe - I really liked it, like a slight toned down Schenkerla.

Of course it was the last night in Poznan that we were able to avoid the madness in the Square and go up a side street to a great bar with 180 polish beers, by that stage though my liver was kaput so only had a few. We had tried Brovarnia in the square but after waiting 40 minutes for our first beer we gave up and went elsewhere - their honey beer was nice but not worth the wait.

I must say the Polish people were just so friendly and welcoming, had such a great time even if most of it was spent drinking Zywiez (?). Though the Zubrowka and Apple juice is nice too.

Went to Brovarnia and enjoyed their wheat and dark ales. They didn't have their single hop IPA on unfortunately, while we were their the Spanish national team showed up too. Can't imagine they were there for a few brews though.

Derek, we went to a bar on a side street off the main square that boasted "120 Polish beers", I kept asking for anything but Pils/lager and kept getting lager. They also had no wheat beer or wit.

In general I found Polish beer to be pretty rubbish. Tyskie, Lech, Warka and Zywiec seemed to be the most regularly available. Lech Pils was probably the best of the lot.

The stuff made by Pinta was fantastic though. Their APA smelt amazing and reminded me of Punk IPA and their stout was also lovely. Would definitely buy more if it appeared in Ireland. Couldn't get into the Brovaria in Poznan as it was always rammed but found another brewpub in Gdansk that was pretty decent, had alt, wit and pils. After several days of crappy lagers anything was gonna taste good I suppose.

If you're ever about Poznan the tour of the Lech brewery is definitely worth seeing. We paid 6PLN with a student card (€1.40) and got our own personal tour guide. It's a working brewery so you get to experience all the sights, smells and temperatures and also see just how mechanised they've made the entire process. The bottling/canning lines alone were mesmerising. The guide said it was so quick it would only take them 48 hours to bottle everyone in Ireland a beer. Mental.

Some photos of the nicer stuff.

I actually showed Jacob's post to the barman and he said the only one of them he had was the Pinta smoked beer so I stuck with that as it wasn't too strong, the other dark beers they had were all up in the 10% range and I was too pickled from 10 days of mostly lager to go near them. Really wish I'd found that place a few days previously.

Didn't get near any interesting bars in Gdansk or Sopot unfortunately.

I found that a lot of the 7%+ beers weren't very good. The stouts and porters I tried were nearly all far too malty and sweet and didn't manage to balance the alcohol level properly at all.

Speaking about strong beers.
Anyone had a chance to try some proper polish baltic porter?
