I've never really seen the point of loud music in bars since mostly people go there to socialise and talk. There seems to be an idea that loud music gives the illusion that it is a lively exciting place to be, especially when their target demographic is younger. I think that Wetherspoons have effectively knocked that argument on the head in the UK since all their pubs are music-free and they are invariably busy and loud with the sound of coversation. They get people through the doors by very competitive pricing, food and usually a good range of real ales. Also, I've known a few pubs that have specifically targeted an older (more afluent?) customer by allowing only over 21s and/or some sort of dress code, having no music and have done very well indeed.

I'd make an exception to music in bars for some good live music though. That is more interactive enjoyment rather than an intrusive background noise.

I think it's to make you drink, as you can't talk to each other so you may as well just drink fast.
Porter house has live music, but it's very repetitive. Same guy almost every friday/sat night, and the first time you see him he's good, after that same set, same songs, same jokes.
Also I think that as we get older and see our friends less regularly we tend to want to catch up rather than drink and dance. Thats my experience anyway.
I'd rather go to a proper gig than a bar with live music though usually. Can depend on the mood I suppose.

The B&C was wonderful of Friday evening. Light music and great beer. It was disconcertingly quiet, though. Couldn't help but think that the place will struggle if that's a typical Friday night upstairs.

The owners of the Market Bar were denied a license for music when they opened - I think a lot of people favoured it becuase of that. They certainly did a roaring trade.

In any event, I hope the B&C is successful for what they seem to be doing for Irish micros, and quality beer in Dublin. If it takes music at the weekends, then I'll be content to choose weekday nights.
