Abbots Ale House 16 years 9 months ago #1

Went into the Abbot's pub , which is above the off licence, on Sunday night. Excellent selection of world beers with approx 80 different bottles and 4 on draught. It was great to be able to walk up to the fridge, select a beer, hand it to the barman, have it served in its proper glass and have a chat about all things beer.

Very cosy pub with a fantastic selection and a homely atmosphere unusual for a place that's only been open since November. Check it out if you happen to be Corkwise.

It's on my list but I haven't made it there yet. I did finally make it to the Hi-B the last time I was down and it didn't disappoint <!-- s:) --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_smile.gif" alt=":)" title="Smile" /><!-- s:) -->

I find the off-licience there very over priced. They have a good selection but their prices are insane. 9.50 for a 750ml of duvel. 3 x 330ml is cheaper !! I think 9 Euro. Chimay blue is like 3.80 etc etc. I shop in bradley where the large Duvel is 6 euro, Chimay blue is about 3.50. Not as good selection but I have a list of the max RRP of the beers and Bradleys is closer to the mark.

It is actually the case that someone from the Abbots Ale house came over and said that he was charging too little for the ale's and he should put up the price. I don't support such a business and when I asked about the larger bottles of beer being more expensive such as in the Duvel case all I got was a shrug.

I avoid it like Donavan's who are another crowd who have a 20-30% premium on their drink.

I used to go to the abbots a a good bit for off sales before. It was always kind of pricey, but Mossy used to be very helpful, and it does have a good selection. The management has changed, and now I don't find it as appealing. I also get standard ales in Bradleys, but now that the Beerhaus is doing off sales, I go there a lot too. It means that I can have a quick pint after work on a Friday in a nice atmosphere, can find out what's new in, and can build up a bit of stock for the week without breaking the bank. I think I've cleared them out of Belfast Black.
